What is a Bio-Basin?
A bio-basin, or bio-retention basin, is an engineered landscaping solution designed to manage stormwater runoff. These basins filter pollutants, reduce flooding risks, and allow water to naturally infiltrate back into the ground.
In high-rainfall areas like the Gold Coast, bio-basins play a crucial role in controlling stormwater, improving water quality, and reducing environmental impact.

Arundel Bio-Basin Project
We’re excited to share one of our latest commercial landscaping projects — a bio-basin installation in Arundel. This project highlights our commitment to environmentally conscious solutions, combining functionality with aesthetics to manage stormwater effectively.
Let’s walk you through the key aspects of this project and how we achieved a sustainable result for our client.
1. Placement of Concrete Weir
A key structural element of the bio-basin, the concrete weir helps control water flow and prevent erosion.
2. Stormwater Outlet Rock Protection
We placed rock protection around stormwater outlets to prevent erosion and ensure the longevity of the system.
3. Grouted Stone Pitching
This process strengthens the structural integrity of the basin, reducing the risk of washouts and ensuring stability over time.

4. Sandstone Boulder Retaining Installation
Using natural sandstone boulders, we created a sturdy and visually appealing retaining wall that also serves as a functional barrier.
5. Trimming and Levelling of Bio-Basin Bases
Precise levelling was critical to ensure water flowed efficiently through the basin, allowing it to function as intended.
6. Installation of Geofabric Layer
A geofabric layer was installed to stabilise the soil and prevent erosion, improving the durability of the bio-basin.

7. Drainage System Installation
- Slotted Rigid Pipe: Installed to enhance water flow and prevent blockages.
- Bio-Basin Drainage Layer: A specialised drainage layer was added to facilitate water infiltration.
- Coarse Sand Transition Layer: This layer helps filter water and improve soil permeability.
8. Concreting Installation
We completed various concreting tasks to reinforce the bio-basin’s structure and ensure a long-lasting result.
9. Planting of Tube Stock Plants
To complete the project, we planted tube stock plants suited to bio-basin environments. These plants enhance water filtration, stabilise the soil, and add a natural aesthetic to the area.

Environmental Impact and Benefits
This bio-basin will significantly reduce stormwater runoff and improve water quality in the area. By incorporating native plants and sustainable drainage solutions, we’ve created a low-maintenance, environmentally friendly feature that benefits both the property and the wider community.
Key benefits of this project include:
✅ Reduced risk of flooding
✅ Improved water quality
✅ Natural filtration of pollutants
✅ Enhanced landscape aesthetics
Overcoming Project Challenges: Tailored Solutions in Action
No project is without its unique hurdles, and this bio-basin installation was no exception. During the process, we encountered a challenge that required quick thinking and a tailored solution to ensure the project’s success.
Our team worked closely with the client to identify the issue and implement a practical solution that maintained both the project’s timeline and quality standards.
