Surfers Paradise Canal Side Landscape Transformation
This Surfers Paradise canal-front property underwent a complete landscape transformation to create a more functional, family-friendly outdoor environment while elevating the overall design. The project focused on reshaping the sloping yard, introducing strong structural elements, and delivering a refined outdoor space that connects seamlessly with the home and waterfront outlook.
From major earthworks and engineered retaining walls to planting, turf, and modern feature pathways, the finished result delivers both lifestyle usability and a premium aesthetic suited to canal-side living.
Scope of Work
The project involved reshaping the yard between the pool and canal, constructing a structural retaining wall system, extending outdoor entertaining areas, and installing new landscaping elements throughout the property. Structural works, hardscape finishes, planting, irrigation, and turf installation were all delivered to create a cohesive outdoor environment designed for both family use and visual impact.

Design Collaboration
This project was delivered in collaboration with the landscape design team at Botany Design Co, whose concept guided the layout, planting structure, and overall visual direction of the space. Their design vision played an important role in shaping the final outcome, bringing together structural landscaping and softscape elements into a cohesive canal-side environment.
1. Excavation and Structural Landscape Foundations
The transformation began with extensive excavation to reshape the sloping yard between the pool and canal. This stage was critical in preparing the site for the structural retaining wall system and creating a level outdoor space that could be safely used by the family.
The excavation works allowed the team to carefully regrade the area, manage levels across the property, and establish the foundation required for the engineered wall construction.

2. Engineered Retaining Walls and Floating Steps
To stabilise the reshaped landscape and create the new usable levels, an engineered rendered block retaining wall system was constructed along the canal boundary. Screw piers were installed to support the structure due to the proximity to the water, ensuring long-term strength and stability.
The retaining walls were built in a tiered configuration, with a garden bed positioned between the wall levels to soften the structure and introduce planting. Floating concrete steps were integrated within the design, adding both visual interest and practical access between levels.
The finished wall system not only stabilises the yard but also forms one of the defining design features of the entire landscape.

3. Outdoor Entertaining and Hardscape Improvements
To improve the connection between the home and the yard, a concrete extension was poured adjacent to the alfresco area. This additional space increases the usable entertaining zone and creates a smoother transition from the covered outdoor living area into the garden.
Custom round concrete steppers were installed throughout the landscape to create a feature pathway system. Each step was finished with a micro cement topping, delivering a clean, refined surface that complements the modern landscape style.
Cowra White decorative pebbles were installed around the step zones to provide contrast and elevate the overall finish while maintaining a crisp, minimal aesthetic.

4. Pool Fencing and Landscape Structure
To enhance the canal outlook, the existing black aluminium pool fence was removed and replaced with frameless-style glass fencing. This upgrade maintains pool safety compliance while opening up the view to the water and surrounding landscape.
Garden edges were defined with minimal-profile aluminium edging, creating sharp, clean transitions between lawn and garden beds. These structural details help maintain the landscape over time while reinforcing the modern design language across the property.

5. Garden Construction, Planting and Irrigation
Garden beds were built up with quality soil and finished with black mulch to keep the palette understated while allowing the greenery and feature planting to stand out. Large decorative Quatro pots were positioned throughout the landscape to anchor key areas and highlight statement planting.
All plants and feature trees were supplied and installed across the property, carefully positioned to match the design intent and create layered greenery throughout the space.
To support the long-term health of the landscape, a fully automatic irrigation system was installed. Dripline irrigation services the garden beds while pop-up sprinklers provide even watering across the turf areas.

6. Turf Installation and Final Landscape Finishes
To complete the outdoor transformation, Sir Walter Buffalo turf was installed across the newly levelled lawn areas. The turf provides a durable, family-friendly surface that performs well in active outdoor spaces while bringing the entire landscape together visually.
The finished lawn zone now provides a soft, usable space for everyday use, particularly for the client’s children, while complementing the surrounding hardscape and planting.
